Weight-Loss Surgery May Reduce Cancer Risk

The dramatic weight loss that follows bariatric surgery may do more than put your diabetes into remission. It also may protect you from cancer. Researchers followed 88,625 very obese people whose average age was 45—most were women, and just over a third had diabetes—for an average of 3½ years. The overall cancer risk was 33 percent lower for those who underwent bariatric surgery than for those who did not. Surgery had an even stronger impact on obesity-related cancers. Pancreatic cancer risk dropped by 54 percent, colon cancer risk by 41 percent, and the risk for breast cancer in postmenopausal women by 42 percent.
