Eating Slower Might Aid Weight Loss


Eating slowly may help you lose weight. That’s what Japanese researchers suggest after studying the eating habits of nearly 60,000 adults with type 2 diabetes, whose average age was about 47. About a third had a body mass index (a ratio of weight to height used to estimate how close a person is to a healthy weight) of 25 or greater, considered overweight in the United States. The researchers collected six years of health data and grouped the participants according to their self-reported eating pace: slow, normal, or fast. The researchers linked eating speed to obesity: The slowest eaters were 42 percent less likely to be obese than the fastest. Dining at a normal, instead of fast, speed dropped the obesity risk by 29 percent. The lesson: Take time to enjoy your food, and you may lose a few pounds.
