Lack of Sleep Lowers Insulin Sensitivity in Fat Cells


Think those late nights are harmless? Think again. Researchers assigned seven adults without diabetes to four consecutive nights of sleep deprivation and four nights of normal rest, taking samples of participants' fat cells after each test. They learned that fat cells are 30 percent less sensitive to insulin when a person is tired than when the person is well rested. The response from fat cells mirrored the effect of sleep deprivation on the entire body's insulin sensitivity.
